Third Year University

The material that is taught at third year level mathematics often varies considerably from university to university. These notes cover topics that are suitable to be taught at this level. Much of it is regularly taught at Macquarie University.

Surprisingly, the prerequisite knowledge required is not very extensive. For the Geometry and Topology and Group Theory notes the student should have a good knowledge of vector spaces (Second Year) and for Galois Theory the student also needs to know a good deal of the material in the Group Theory notes.

For the Axiomatic Set Theory and Number Theory very little prerequisite knowledge is required, but a great deal of mathematical maturity and the ability to absorb abstract concepts is needed. This is why these notes are not really suitable for the typical second year student.
